Despite a recommendation for release by the Arizona Executive Board of Clemency, Gov. Jan Brewer refuses to explain why she will not release convicted killer Bill Macumber from prison. In its report to the governor last August, the state’s clemency board said there is “substantial doubt that Mr. Macumber is guilty” of the double homicide he was convicted of in 1974.
These days it’s the staff at the Arizona Justice Project, Lindsay Herf and Katie Puzauskas among them, who seem to be the only ones pulling for Bill Macumber.
His story is likely to end up playing out on the national stage some day, if Macumber ever gets out of prison or ends up dying there.
Last year, The Arizona Board of Executive Clemency voted 5-0 in recommending that Macumber be set free. In its letter to Governor Jan Brewer, the board concluded that Macumber has served excessive prison time, has a nearly impeccable behavior record and is not a threat to society. The board concluded something else more significant. Macumber may be innocent.
